Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reportedly been arrested, due to his connection in the ‘Barcagate’ scandal.
RAC1 report that Bartomeu, along with CEO Oscar Grau, head of legal services Roman Gomez Ponti and a former advisor, Jaume Masferrer were all detained by police on Monday morning.
Guillem Balague has reported that the men were arrested on suspicion of “unfair administration, corruption between individuals and money laundering.”
Police have also searched the Barcelona club offices.
The ‘Barcagate’ scandal shook the club last year. Allegations were made that Barcelona hired I3 Ventures, a company used to run smear campaigns. These campaigns would allegedly target both current and former Barcelona players.
Barcelona denied these allegations, and terminated their contract with I3 Ventures.
Following the scandal, six directors resigned from the club.
Bartomeu would later step down from his role as president in October, whilst his board of directors followed him.
This was after more than 20,000 club members signed a motion to remove him and called a vote of no confidence.
Barcelona are due to elect a new president on March 7th, but it is so far unknown what affect these reports will have on the elections.
