It seems that the long-awaited appointment of a new Crystal Palace manager could finally be over.
Swiss manager Lucien Favre is the latest frontrunner, with many reporting he has been officially offered the role by Palace’s owners.
However, Palace fans are certainly not getting ahead of themselves.
The reports of Nuno Espírito Santo taking over last month had Palace fans excited, only for the deal to collapse as Everton caused a turning of heads.
In fact, it has been reported that Favre may have garnered interest from other Premier League clubs, including Everton.
If he was to be appointed, it would be a real coup for the South London club, and would signify a step in the right direction as they head into a rebuilding process.
63-year-old Favre has a wealth of managerial experience in a career spanning over 25 years.
Favre spent the first decade of his career managing in his home nation of Switzerland, where he led FC Zurich to back-to-back league titles from 2006-08.
His success with Zurich was enough to earn a break managing in the Bundesliga.
Favre led Hertha Berlin to a top 4 finish in 2009, before moving onto Borussia Mönchengladbach where he really made a name for himself.
He took over at Gladbach with the club sat in last place. Favre managed to turn things around and avoid relegation.
The following season he remarkably led his side to a fourth-place finish and Champions League qualification.
An unbelievable achievement for a team who almost dropped out the top flight in the previous year.
That team included the likes of Marc-André ter Stegen and Marco Reus, two players brought through the academy by Favre.
During 2014-15 Favre went one step further, finishing third to qualify automatically for the Champions League.
In May 2016 Favre would move to Nice in France. At the time Nice were not considered to be a side competing for a top spot.
However, in the first season under Favre, Nice finished third and qualified for the Champions League.
Favre has built a reputation on getting extraordinary results from teams with smaller budgets and expectations.
Therefore, fans are excited at the prospect of him taking over at a Palace as there are clear parallels to his previous clubs.
Favre’s biggest job to date was at Borussia Dortmund where he was sacked in December 2020.
His Dortmund record was respectable, but a club of that stature demands fast results.
It seems Favre’s style and abilities suit a smaller club to build around, again making Palace perfect on paper.
Looking at playing style and tactics, the analysis will again excite Palace fans.
Favre’s sides are known for fluid attacking football with a high tempo, as well as resolute defences.
Along with that, Favre is known for his ability to develop young players and integrate them into the first team picture.
With Palace recently investing £20m into their academy last year, which has produced plenty of talent over the years, Favre could be the perfect match.
Now if this appointment was to be confirmed, there is no doubt it is not an easy job to take over.
It has been well reported that the Eagles are on the brink of a rebuild with over a dozen players out of contract.
The daunting task ahead could be enough to put a manger off, which may be the reason Palace have struggled to find a swift appointment.
However, with Favre’s track record, it seems he would thrive in a situation like Palace find themselves in.
After his disappointing spell at such a big club like Dortmund, this could be a chance for Favre to start fresh at a club level that he has had success at in the past.
Palace fans have every right to be excited about this appointment and will be eager for the deal to get done fast.
