League 2 transfers of the window!

Preview and transfer articles ahead of the new season are in full flow, from players across Europe to watch as well as teams to watch. Now though, the Football League is under microscope. There is always a plethora of moves around the English clubs, free transfers being commonplace in the lower leagues. Whether it be former Premier League names or players working their way up the EFL system, here are some of the best League 2 transfers of this summer window…

Offrande Zanzala to Barrow

Going in alphabetical order which means Barrow is the first location, a side who only returned to League 2 last season. Their lengthy hiatus from the Football League has come to an end and there is a level of positivity in the air now. Barrow have brought in a number of free transfers including striker Josh Gordon from Walsall, Carlisle’s Offrande Zanzala being another. Zanzala had a decent spell with Accrington Stanley but having struggled at Brunton Park, he’ll be looking to re-find his goalscoring form.

Tristan Abrahams to Carlisle

Next to Tristan Abrahams who, after being a big prospect at Norwich, has had limited success in his various League 2 stints. Playing for Leyton Orient and Newport he failed to establish himself as a key figure, the likes of Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt outperforming him at the latter. He replaces the aforementioned Zanzala at Carlisle under Chris Beech, joining top-class finisher Lewis Alessandra in the attacking ranks as well as Zach Clough from Wigan.

Freddie Sears to Colchester

Onto another striker and Freddie Sears is one of a few Ipswich players to join Colchester following the Tractor Boys’ relegation. Sears of West Ham fame has suffered quite the fall from grace having burst onto the scene with the Irons, spending several seasons playing for Ipswich with a varying level of success. For various reasons he’s been unable to maintain a consistent standard but at 31 he’s getting to an age where the chances are running out.

Omar Beckles to Leyton Orient

Next to a Leyton Orient side who have a lot of positive talk surrounding them, the experienced Kenny Jackett coming into manage them. Having played for Grenada in the Gold Cup just recently, Omar Beckles is on the move. Beckles is an experienced defender who is a product of the English football pyramid, coming from the lower-leagues to now play in the EFL. Darren Pratley of Charlton is another player with the know-how brought in by Jackett as Orient try to mount a promotion charge out of League 2.

Rhys Oates to Mansfield

Talking of players to feature in the lower reaches of English football and Rhys Oates has been a notable name for Hartlepool. He has been prevalent on the scoresheet and he’s not alone in this, Oli Hawkins arriving from Ipswich and Danny Johnson from Orient too. The theme for Mansfield seems to be bringing in some renowned goalscorers and a return to League 2 for Oates is a huge opportunity.

Courtney Baker-Richardson to Newport

Over to Wales now where Newport County under Michael Flynn got to the playoffs last season against the odds. They are always impressive in one way or another a former Swansea man has been brought in. Courtney Baker-Richardson was spoken of very highly whilst with the Swans but as can often be the case, a number of loan spells prove to bring stumbling blocks. This time it’s a permanent departure from the Liberty Stadium and so hopefully at 25, he can solidify himself as an established League 2 or higher starting striker.

Hallam Hope to Oldham

Attacking players seem to take up the bulk of this list and the same goes for the next man Hallam Hope. The former Everton youth player has never quite been a prolific scorer whether it be with Carlisle or Swindon but there have been glimpses for sure. He is a full international for Barbados and had had a good record in Premier League 2 so Oldham will be hoping this can be replicated in League 2, especially given that the next person on the list has moved on to pastures new.

Conor McAleny to Salford

The theme of Everton remains, the Toffees having a large amount of loanees and former players knocking about in the pyramid after all. Salford are looked down upon by many due to their blasé approach when it comes to transfers, they hardly lack funds and backing after all. They have brought in Conor McAleny from Oldham who scored 17 in 40 last season which is a decent record for a mid-table. Salford have let James Wilson and Emmanuel Dieseruvwe move on, two attackers, and McAleny is perfectly capable of making up for the pair’s output himself in all honesty.

Jake Taylor to Stevenage

Exeter City were another side, like Newport, who were in the hunt for the playoffs but they failed to make it. This has often been the case at St James’ Park, either that or they make it and fail to advance and a fair few names have left as a result, key players such as Jake Taylor and Randell Williams. The former has remained in League 2 with Stevenage, a side who have occupied a relegation battle in recent years. Taylor along with Ryan Bowman was a key source of goals for the Grecians and so for his next move not to be a step up is an interesting one. Maybe this is a statement of intent from Stevenage…

Nathaniel Knight-Percival to Tranmere

Last season’s League 2 playoffs are again a bone of contention with Nathaniel Knight-Percival playing a role as Morecambe put together an impressive campaign under the gregarious Derek Adams. The experienced centre-half as in fact dropped back down to League 2 following the Shrimps promotion, joining a side they beat on their path. Tranmere were eliminated in the semi-finals by Morecambe but with Knight-Percival coming in as well as Liam Feeney returning on a permanent basis this time, they could go one better this time around.

Manny Monthe to Walsall

Finally then to Walsall have acquired the services of an always imposing presence at the back, Manny Monthe. Monthe comes through the door along with former Orient goalscorer Connor Wilkinson and the pair are both good signings in truth. Monthe has established himself as a very capable League 2 defender with Forest Green and Tranmere. Walsall have been a fairly porous team who have struggled on the goals front too so hopefully this duo along with Josh Labadie from Newport can propel them up the table.
